Since this forum started, it looked like everyone was going with the idea of using the 1800s era, but our brilliant member desertfox mentioned the post-apocalyptic setting.
What are your thoughts on this?

Choosing what types of units there will be could be pretty fun. Maybe you could tame mutated monsters, or catch a bunch of zombies and conveniently release them inside the enemy's base. Troops could also be wielding different sorts of weird weapons made from scraps, along with weapons found and replicated from the past. One of the resource fields could be abandoned houses or cities where you can scavenge for food and random scraps. Resources could be different types of scraps. The possibilities are endless, brainstorm away!

You might also consider putting in Bandit/Raider camps seeing as in every era there have been such criminals and possibly fields where recent NPC battles have taken place such as 2 raider/bandit groups have fought and you would be able to atk this field fight the remaining forces of the victor and claim spoils and salvage from dead units and damaged planes/tanks/rigged cars or trucks, if it is an different time period you could capture horses and siege equipment. Just a thought personally id love to see that in many games.

I would also look at modern age, but in a country fractured by civil war, narco terrorism or completly broke. The country is broken up into different factions with several cities or villages under their control. Put a time line and time limit on the server to instill more competition and generate more revenue. At the end of the time limit the following occurs: All objectives are reached, eliminated the most players, conquered the most terriotory, etc gets a prize. The prize could credits for a number of items and weapon systems in the next server or an elite server.

I'm loving the post-apocalyptic future idea, there are already quite a few past war themed games around and this would also give you a chance to throw in some irregularities (mutations etc).

After I get a basic, playable version of the game, I think I'll start making a story so that there is main quest. As you advance through this quest, you could discover new technologies etc.. When I start making money with the game, I think I'd like to maybe hire story writers to come up with more quests that I could add. Side quests with rewards and stuff... This way there is always something to do and there won't be as much time spent staring at your screen waiting for things to complete The post-apocalyptic setting is unanimous so far. I'm really looking forward to making this game now, I see it being even more interesting and fun to make!

my thoughts on the post apocalyptic were necessarily confided to the nuclear type. how about something along the lines of 2 years after a major, multible meteor strike. all major cities have been abandoned and only small groups of humans are able to stay alive. no radiation to worry about and lots of possibilities for reclaiming small cities. with all the military bases and organizations disbanded. players would be ex-military types who have taken it upon themselves to restart man's dominance. work on this.

I think people really like the nuclear apocalypse thing because radiation opens up many doors. There could be mutated troops and NPC camps, or maybe nuclear resource fields that you can harvest from but you get casualties based on your radiation suit tech level but these resources are required to build the most powerful troops. or maybe you can feed regular soldiers radiation to mutate them lol.
I also see a lot of potential for amazing storries and quests for players to follow. And I think that the whole concept that people are still at war after war killed everything is kind of neat.
Mainly, I think radiation is going to be really fun to work with.
Is there a reason why you might think nuclear apocalypse wouldn't be amazing? I would gladly discuss this if that is the case.

A Mad Max type setting was pretty much what I started thinking of when it came to post-nuclear apocalypse. You could have a huge push for scavenging and stealing fuel from other people since oil extraction would have ceased. Like in Mad Max and Borderlands I imagine lots of desert and sand covered ruins, depending on how far into the future we're supposed to be. Uranium could be collected from abandoned nuclear power plants. Research can be done to find better ways to re-enrich spent uranium or some junk.
